Workplace Mental Wellbeing
Mental health issues can have a significant impact on employers in the UK in terms of costs associated with increased sickness absence, decreased productivity (being at work but not fully functioning), and higher staff turnover. According to a report by Deloitte in 2020, the estimated cost of poor mental health to employers in the UK is between £33 billion and £42 billion per year.
The report suggests that for every pound spent on mental health initiatives in the workplace, employers can see a return on investment of between £1.50 and £9. This demonstrates that investing in workplace mental health can not only improve the well-being of employees but also benefit the business in terms of reduced costs and increased productivity.
Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic has also led to an increase in mental health issues among the workforce, which could potentially lead to even higher costs for employers. Therefore, it is important for employers to prioritise the mental health and well-being of their employees and take steps to promote a supportive and healthy workplace culture.
- Encouraging open communication: Employers can create a safe space for employees to share their concerns or issues. This can be done by promoting regular one-on-one meetings with managers and by providing access to employee assistance programs.
- Promoting work-life balance: Employers can encourage a healthy work-life balance by providing flexible work arrangements, such as the ability to work from home or flexible work hours. This can help employees to manage their work and personal responsibilities.
- Providing mental health resources: Employers can offer resources such as mental health counselling/Therapy, stress-management training, and workshops on mindfulness and resilience.
- Encouraging physical activity: Employers can promote physical activity and exercise by providing access to gym memberships or fitness classes.
- Promoting a positive workplace culture: Employers can create a positive workplace culture by recognizing and rewarding employee achievements, promoting a supportive work environment, and encouraging social interaction between employees.
